This was the reality for a scientist who discovered that a medical journal had listed him as an author on a paper that he had not written. The shock and confusion that followed this revelation were unparalleled, as he grappled with the implications of having his name associated with a piece of work he had no involvement in. The scientist, whose identity has not been disclosed, was understandably outraged by this unethical practice. To make matters worse, the journal then demanded a hefty sum of 499 euros to remove his name from the fake paper. It was a blatant attempt to extort money from someone who had been wrongly implicated in a dubious publication.
