As the Milan-Cortina 2026 organizing committee finalizes its venue plans, big air skiing has become one of the more closely watched events on the program. Unlike the alpine disciplines headed to the mountain resorts of Bormio and Cortina, the freeski big air competition is set to take place in Milan itself, using a temporary structure that organizers have described as demountable and transportable after the Games. The decision to bring the event into an urban setting reflects a broader push within the Olympic movement to reduce the footprint of new permanent venues, though it has also prompted discussion among athletes about how a downtown ramp will compare to purpose-built mountain facilities. The course designers are expected to draw heavily on lessons from Beijing 2022, where big air made its Olympic debut, while adapting to the tighter footprint and weather patterns of a northern Italian city.
With the qualification window now open, the 2024–2025 World Cup season is effectively serving as the proving ground for athletes chasing Olympic quotas. The field remains dominated by riders who blend triple-cork rotations with nuanced grabs, but judges have increasingly rewarded clean execution and amplitude over raw rotation count, a trend that could shape how competitors build their run strategies in Cortina’s lead-up. National federations are also investing earlier in big air-specific development pipelines, recognizing that the discipline’s inclusion in back-to-back Olympics has turned it from a niche contest into a cornerstone of freestyle skiing programs.
