Aaron Hicks, a centerfielder for the New York Yankees, was designated for assignment on Saturday, August 7th and replaced by Greg Allen, who was signed to a major league contract.
Hicks joined the Yankees in 2016 after being traded from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for catcher John Ryan Murphy. Since joining the Yankees, Hicks has been a solid contributor on both offense and defense. In 2018, he signed a seven-year contract extension with the team worth $70 million.
However, Hicks has struggled with injuries over the past few years. He missed all of the 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery and has only played in 36 games this season. In those 36 games, Hicks batted .194 with four home runs and 14 RBI. With the Yankees currently in the midst of a playoff race, they decided to make a change and designated Hicks for assignment.
Replacing Hicks is Greg Allen, who the Yankees acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres last week. Allen is a speedy outfielder with good defensive skills and has been playing well in Triple-A this season, batting .298 with four home runs and 38 RBI in 70 games.
