AAA projects that over 37 million Americans plan to travel over Memorial Day weekend, which is a 60% increase from last year's record low and marks the second-highest travel volume on record since AAA started tracking these statistics in 2000. The majority of travelers are expected to drive to their destinations, with an estimated 34 million hitting the roads, while close to three million are expected to fly.
Despite the increase in travel, the pandemic is still a concern for many individuals. Health officials recommend that travelers continue to practice safety measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19, such as wearing a mask, frequently washing hands, and practicing social distancing.
