Born on December 1, 1951, in Rowayton, Connecticut, Williams discovered his passion for acting early on. After attending prep school and Dartmouth College, he moved to New York City to pursue his dream further. He initially started with small stage roles, and his big break came with the 1975 Broadway production of Grease.

Williams' first film role was in 1976's The Eagle Has Landed, alongside Michael Caine. It was his performance as George Berger in the 1979 musical Hair that earned him widespread recognition. Williams' dynamic acting and charming personality made him a fan favorite.

Throughout his career, Williams appeared in a variety of films, including Prince of the City, Once Upon a Time in America, and the 1995 thriller, The Devil's Own. His work in television was also notable, with a starring role in the series Everwood and a recurring part in the hit show, Chicago Fire.
