Memorial Day: A Time to Honor and Remember Our Fallen Heroes
WASHINGTON (AP) - On Memorial Day, Americans across the country take time to honor their fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great nation. This year, President Joe Biden led the National Memorial Day Observance with a traditional wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery alongside First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and her husband, Douglas Emhoff.
In his public address, President Biden praised the service and sacrifice of generations of U.S. troops who laid down their lives in defense of our freedoms and democracy. He thanked their families for their profound sacrifices and reminded all Americans of the burden of loss which they carry for the rest of their lives.
This year's Memorial Day holds a special significance as we reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the wars of the past, as well as those who have been serving on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a nation, we have lost over 600,000 of our citizens to the virus, and we honor their lives and the tireless efforts of our frontline workers.
