India is in mourning after one of the country's worst train accidents in recent times. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on Saturday, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

According to officials, at least 275 people lost their lives in the disaster. Another 350 were injured, with many in critical condition. The train, which was carrying more than 1,000 passengers, derailed near the town of Pukhrayan, about 65 miles south of the state capital, Lucknow.

India's railway minister, Suresh Prabhu, has ordered an inquiry into the disaster. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, he said investigators were looking at why the signaling system did not work as intended. "It is too early to apportion blame," he said. "We need to find out what went wrong and take corrective action."

Eyewitnesses say the train was moving at high speed when it suddenly derailed. Several coaches overturned, trapping passengers inside. Rescue workers worked tirelessly to free those who were trapped, but many died before they could be rescued.
