Shark Attack in Egypt: Beach Closures and Safety Measures
Egypt’s coastline is a popular destination for travelers from around the world seeking a relaxing beach vacation with endless sunshine. Unfortunately, recent events have led to the closure of a 74-kilometre stretch of the Egyptian coastline. The reason? A series of shark attacks.
Shark attacks can be rare in Egypt, but the recent incidents have escalated concerns. The first recorded attack this year occurred in early May 2021, when a 12-year-old boy was attacked while swimming in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Marsa Matruh. The boy lost one arm and sustained injuries on his other arm and leg. In response, officials closed beaches in the area to protect the public from further harm.
Since then, there have been several more shark attacks along the Egyptian coast, including along the popular resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh and other nearby areas. Due to the recent attacks, authorities have closed down a 74-kilometre area of the coast until Sunday to help protect the public. Additionally, authorities are recommending that swimmers avoid certain areas and take extra caution while swimming in the coastal waters.
